Formed in Los Angeles in 1983, the Red Hot Chili Peppers are an American rock and funk band that have enjoyed a long and successful career that has seen them climb the musical ladder to stand up on the very top levels with the very best recording artists and bands in history. The group is comprised of Anthony Kiedis on vocals, Flea on Bass, Chad Smith on drums and guitarist Josh Klinghoffer. The Red Hot Chili Peppers, or RHCP as they are commonly abbreviated, are one of the biggest selling bands of all time: Their achievements include in excess of 80 million records sold worldwide, sixteen Grammy Award nominations, six wins, a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the title for most successful band in alternative rock radio history with 13 number one singles totalling 85 weeks at the top spot. Though they had been regularly releasing music for most of the 1980s, the band's big commercial break came in 1990 upon the release of the now iconic album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, and their popularity hit its peak in 1999 with Californication, their biggest success with more than 16 million copies sold worldwide. RHCP continued to ride this wave through the early 2000s with more wildly successful albums like By The Way and Stadium Arcadia, before taking an extended hiatus after a gruelling world tour. Though the theme of drug addiction and interchanging band members has been a common cause of contention throughout the history of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the constant presence of front man Anthony Kiedis and charismatic bassist Flea has helped to keep the band at the forefront of the rock music industry, being a noted influence on many of today's major acts across a wide range of genres.
